History of Compassion

The Isle of Wight County Humane Society is an all-volunteer organization that promotes responsible pet care and the humane treatment of animals in our local community. We started 40 years ago, in 1980 with a small group of four individuals who shared a passion for helping animals. The small group of individuals recognized the need for a rescue group to assist both the Isle of Wight County Animal Shelter and citizens within the community with their pets.

In 1999, our organization became an all-volunteer, non-profit, 501c3, home-based foster organization. As our organization grew and gained funds through pet adoptions and fundraising, we were able to start a medical grant program that assists individuals within the community who cannot afford veterinary care for their pets. We were also able to start a spay/neuter program to help control over-population.
